The place
At the foothills of mount Lykaion lay the springs of a beautiful “female” river called Neda. The river is a natural boundary between Ilia and Messinia. According to Greek mythology Neda was a nymph, a goddess of water and she was one of those who nourished Zeus. The gorge of river Neda is a natural wonder of the Messinian countryside. The constantly varying landscape, the lush, the turquoise waters and the majestic cliffs, make the crossing of this gorge an unforgettable experience.
The activity
Our route begins near village of Platania where we gain access to the gorge from the nearby bridge. We get all the necessary equipment and we are ready to do an amazing crossing. We follow the stream which leads us into a totally unspoiled natural environment. We walk through wild vegetation, old plane trees and wild oaks, through narrow rocky passages and impressive ponds discovering a well hidden and genuine natural paradise. Near the village of Neda we discover an enchanting portrait of nature. A creek called ‘’ neraidorema’’ (fairy creek). Crystal waterfalls flowing endlessly create blue ponds then poured into the main river and continue rapidly their course to the sea. At this spot is the end of our journey. We relax in the wake of the gurgling water enjoying traditional delicacies and refreshing swims in the cool waters of the ponds.

Neda is a river of the western Peloponnese Stems from mount Lykaion flows westward and empties into the Ionian Sea.The river was named after the nymph Neda who was a goddess of the waters Near the banks of the river is the ancient town of Phiigalia and the temple of Epicureus Apollo.The river over a large part of it crosses a ravine with very rich vegetation Along its course, numerous waterfalls are created.The largest is near Figalleia and has a height of about 25 meters.Neda is a well kept secret river of Greece, still a hidden gem! A perfect choice for hiking canyoning and river trekking.
This river trek starts near the village Platania where you meet your guide.After briefing we start our trek Though there is not a real track we aim to walk through or along the river We may have to hop on rocks, jump on the river bank, figure out for the best way Walking in the water is unavoidable, while in other parts swimming is absolutely necessary Along the river course there is rich vegetation with plane trees,waterfalls appear suddenly in front of our eyes and in parts of the route the river narrows and is surrounded by steep rocks After 4 hours walking swimming we reach to the main majestic waterfall of 35 m creating a large pond with crystal clear turquoise waters We shall swim in the pediment of the great waterfall and the more daring will descend by rope until the opening of the Stomion cave.
Comfortable shoes - clothing.

Spare pair of shoes that will get wet. Suitable are hiking shoes or trainers (Open shoes, sandals or flip-flops are unsuitable).
Hiking backpack (if available).

Basic physical condition.
No hiking experience required. Walking in the gorge and river is nessecery.
Children need to be accompanied by an adult.
